Abstract

Digital devices have become integral to nursing education, yet excessive use may be associated with stress, sleep disturbance, digital fatigue, nomophobia, and reduced concentration. Digital detox has therefore been considered an approach to limiting nonessential digital exposure without eliminating the educational benefits of technology. This review aimed to analyze the influence of digital detox on stress levels among nursing students based on findings from previous studies.A literature review was conducted using 22 scientific articles published between 2017 and 2025. The articles were narratively synthesized according to research focus, intervention characteristics, associations between digital use and stress, and findings from relevant stress-management interventions The synthesis indicated that problematic digital use was associated with psychological distress, digital burnout, sleep disturbance, nomophobia, and smartphone addiction tendencies. Digital detox may reduce stress, particularly when screen restriction is structured and combined with replacement activities such as mindfulness, relaxation, light exercise, adequate sleep, and direct social interaction. However, direct evidence among nursing students remains limited, and many studies used cross-sectional designs, self-reported measures, or interventions without control groups.  Digital detox may be incorporated into digital wellness and stress-management strategies for nursing students. Its implementation should be selective, flexible, measurable, and compatible with essential academic and clinical technology use. Experimental studies using control groups, objective screen-time measures, and follow-up assessments are still required to strengthen evidence regarding its effectiveness and sustainability.
